Putting a project in the cloud folder
Regletto Writing does not sync anything itself and stores nothing on the internet. A project is an ordinary folder on your computer, see A project's folder. If that folder is inside the folder OneDrive or Google Drive syncs, the service's program uploads every change and brings it to your other computers.
- OneDrive comes with Windows. Its folder is on the left in File Explorer, under OneDrive.
- For Google Drive, install Google's program Google Drive for desktop. Afterwards Google Drive is in File Explorer.
- Many Windows computers already sync the Documents folder through OneDrive. Then the Regletto folder that the setup suggests is inside the cloud folder too, and your projects in it are already synced.
- Microsoft and Google offer no program for Linux that syncs a folder.
- On Linux you need a program from another provider for this, or a service with its own program for Linux, for example Dropbox. Regletto Writing works with any folder such a program syncs, as described on this page.
A new project
- In the window Projects, click New project.
- At Location, choose the cloud folder with the folder button beside it.
- Click Create.
A project that already exists
- With the project open, choose Project → Show project folder. The file manager shows where the folder is.
- Close Regletto Writing.
- Move the project folder into the cloud folder.
- Start Regletto Writing. In the window Projects, the project's tile has a dashed outline and shows Folder not found.
- Right-click the tile, then Find folder, and choose the project folder in its new place.
Good to know
- Put the whole project folder in the cloud folder, not single books from it. A book belongs to its project.
- Set the service's program to always keep the project folder on this computer. Otherwise some files are only on the internet and are fetched when they are opened, and without internet they are missing.
- If every new project should be created in the cloud folder, choose it as the default folder.
- A cloud folder is not a backup. If you delete or overwrite something on one computer, the service syncs that as well. What applies to the folder for backups is under Backup.
- If the service's program is holding a file at that moment, Regletto Writing tries again, see When writing fails.
Opening it on a second computer
On every further computer you add the project once. After that it is in the window Projects there like any other.
- On the second computer, set up the service's program with the same account as on the first.
- Wait until the project folder has arrived there.
- Install Regletto Writing, see Installation.
- In the window Projects, click Add project and choose the project folder in the cloud folder.
Good to know
- The cloud folder may be in a different place on the second computer. Each computer remembers for itself where the project is.
- Everything in the project folder comes with the project: text, pictures, cover, book layout, the project's own words and its sources.
- What is in the Regletto Writing folder stays on each computer: settings, language packages, add-ons and your own fonts. You set them up once on the second computer. Where that folder is, is under The Regletto Writing folder.
- Keep Regletto Writing on the same version on all computers. An older version cannot always open a document that a newer one has saved. So update each computer before you go on writing there, see Updating.
Taking turns
Syncing works as long as only one computer works on the project at a time. Regletto Writing does not notice by itself that a file has changed while the project is open. An open document shows a change from the other computer only when you open it again.
- On the first computer, close Regletto Writing. The window only closes once everything is written, see Automatic saving.
- Wait until the service's program has uploaded everything. It shows when it is done.
- On the second computer, wait until everything has arrived. Only then start Regletto Writing.
Good to know
- A laptop that is closed with the project open still has the project open when you open it again. Close Regletto Writing before you go to the other computer.
- If you find Regletto Writing still open on a computer, close it right away. Do not click a document, scroll or click into the text first. That alone writes this computer's list of documents back. What you changed on the other computer in titles and order is then gone, and new documents from there are at the bottom as Untitled.
- If you forget, the texts of the documents are still not lost, see When both computers change the same document.
When both computers change the same document
If the other computer has changed a document's file while it is open here, Regletto Writing does not write over it. Your version goes into a second file beside it, and the strip at the bottom of the window says so. What that file is called and where it is, is under When another program changes the file.
- As long as the document stays open, you see your version, and everything you go on typing goes into the second file. The document's own file holds the version from the other computer.
- If you open the document again, it shows the version from the other computer.
- Both files are in the book's
manuscriptfolder and begin with the same ID. The second one has.konfliktin its name.
Then you decide which version counts. First open the project's folder with Project → Show project folder, then close Regletto Writing on both computers. The file manager window stays open. The two files are in it under books, in the book's manuscript folder, see Where the files are.
Keeping the version from the other computer
- Move the file with
.konfliktin its name to the recycle bin. - Start Regletto Writing. The document shows the version from the other computer.
Keeping your version
- Move the file with the same ID but without
.konfliktin its name to the recycle bin. - On the file with
.konfliktin its name, delete the.konfliktfrom the name. - Start Regletto Writing. The document shows your version, with its title in its place.
Comparing both versions
- On the file with
.konfliktin its name, replace the.konfliktwith-2. - Start Regletto Writing and open the book. Your version is a separate document Untitled at the bottom of the documents.
- Take over what you need, and delete the document that is left over.
When the service makes a copy
If a computer without internet wrote in the same document as the other one, the service's program may keep both versions itself. It puts the second one as a copy beside the document's file in the manuscript folder and changes its name. Regletto Writing shows no strip for this.
- OneDrive adds the computer's name, for example
…-LAPTOP.json. Regletto Writing shows this copy as a document Untitled at the bottom of the documents. - Dropbox adds a note with a name and the date in brackets. Regletto Writing does not show such a copy. Replace the note, brackets included, with
-2, as under Comparing both versions. Then it is in the documents as Untitled. - Other services name the copy differently. If you do not see it in the documents, rename it as for Dropbox.
- A copy of
index.jsonis not a document but the list of documents. If it is in the documents as Untitled and does not open, move this copy to the recycle bin.
Then take over what you need and delete the document that is left over.
Good to know
- Regletto Writing does not merge two versions. It makes sure that neither is lost, and you decide which one counts.
- Sort out a file with
.konfliktbefore you go on working. If the two computers change the same document again, the new second file replaces the old one.
What does not work
A cloud folder is for taking turns. If two computers work on the same project at the same time, this happens:
| Where | What happens |
|---|---|
| In the same document | There are two versions, see above. Nothing is merged. |
| In the same book | If each computer writes in a different document, the texts stay. For the documents on the left, with titles and order, the computer that last wrote the list counts. Regletto Writing writes it not only when you change something there, but also when you open a document, scroll or click into the text. What the other one changed there is gone without a message. |
| Book and project | If both computers change the title, language or book layout of a book, the name or author of the project, the project's own words or its sources, the computer that saved last counts. There is no second file here. |
Good to know
- A document whose file is there is not lost. If it is missing from the documents on the left, Regletto Writing adds it at the bottom the next time the book is opened, as Untitled. A copy the service has made does not always show, see When the service makes a copy.
- If you share the project folder with another person, the same applies as for two computers: taking turns, not at the same time.
